This month, we celebrate the portraiture of photographer Sophie Bassouls, highlight powerful documentary footage from the Estuary Press archive and present photojournalism from Norway’s NTB archive - alongside curated lightboxes exploring artistic movements such as Realism, Expressionism, and Baroque Art.
As one of the largest news agencies in Norway, NTB (Norsk Telegrambyrå AS) covers a wide range of topics, including politics, current events, sports, culture and more. Their collection provides comprehensive coverage of both national and international news, capturing important moments and stories of interest. Bridgeman Images is pleased to offer historical content from the NTB archives for use editorially and in select commercial projects.
Sophie Bassouls, known for her captivating portraits of writers and artists, initially studied art history before embarking on her photographic career. She took the helm of the photo departments at L’Express and later at Figaro littéraire in 1963. Married to Claude Bassouls, they founded the freelance photojournalism agency Rush in 1976. In 1986, she joined the Sygma agency, where she focused on literary news. Today, Sophie works as an independent photographer with a portfolio of over 3,000 portraits that capture the essence of both French and international intellectual and cultural figures.
Estuary Press is home to the Harvey Richards (1912 –2001) Media Archive, which offers unique film and still photo images of the 1960's on the west coast of America, including images of progressive social movements for change and peace, labour movements, civil rights/social justice advocacy and a healthy planet. The collection encompasses 22 documentary films shot by Harvey Richards between 1958-1978.
